If you’re planning to study abroad in Ireland, health and travel insurance can offer you peace of mind. While travel insurance is optional, all international students must have adequate medical coverage while studying in Ireland. Depending on how long your programme is, and what your country of residence is, what your insurance looks like can vary. Below, we’ll look at how health and travel insurance works in Ireland, and which options will work for different students.

Travel Insurance for International Students in Ireland

Travel insurance covers the cost of a delayed flight, lost or damaged bags, or medical expenses related to an injury or illness while traveling. It can also cover personal liability if a student causes injury or damage during their travels, and emergency evacuation costs related to medical treatment.

Newly arrived international students can in Ireland. This is true whether you’re staying in Ireland for less than a year, or for the first year of your studies if your programme is over a year long. Travel insurance is valid first-year medical coverage as long as it covers you for any period of hospitalization, and provides minimum coverage amounts of €25,000 for accident and €25,000 for disease.

After the first year, non-EEA (European Economic Area) students planning to stay in Ireland must buy private medical insurance for any subsequent years.

Health Insurance Options

At minimum, :

  • Fully cover accidents and medical incidents
  • Cover hospital stays within Ireland
  • Be valid for a minimum of 12 months or the duration of the student’s time in Ireland

Students from the EU or EEA may access public health services in Ireland with their . Depending on their needs, theyÌýmay also wish to have private health insurance for extended coverage. If you’re a UK resident in Ireland for either one semester or one year, the UK government may cover your health care costs. However, UK residents have the same rights as an Irish citizen if they’re (in Ireland to study a course that’s over 12 months long).

Covered by group insurance through your academic institution? A letter of enrolment (LoE) from the institution can be sufficient proof of insurance. If you plan to use your LoE, it must note:

  • You’re part of the college group insurance plan
  • You’ve paid the insurance plan premium and/or required fees
  • An outline of the insurance coverage (like insurance provider and level of coverage)
