  • Some of the sections below refer to individual scholarships, like the Heinrich B枚ll Foundation Scholarships and Hilde Domin Programme.
  • Others refer to a range of opportunities offered by one organization (Erasmus+, DAAD).

When becoming an international student, you’ve got a lot to learn even before you start classes. For this reason, we鈥檙e sharing five important things to know before studying in Canada. Whether it’s understanding how working while studying works, or by sharing some scholarship opportunities, we hope this list is helpful.

Want to study in Canada? Register for your free account on the 老九品茶 platform, and see what programs you鈥檙e eligible for!

A group of international students walk together on campus in the fall.

1. You Can Work While Studying in Canada

Most international students may work while studying in Canada. In most cases, you won’t need a separate work permit to work or , as long as you’re enrolled as a full-time student at a (顿尝滨).听

And, new for April 2026, if your program includes a co-op term, in most cases, you won’t need a separate work permit. , you’ll just need your study permit. That means a little less paperwork to worry about!

Working while studying offers valuable work experience, while also helping you live within your budget. You’ll also develop an international professional network, which can help you build your career after graduation.

2. Many Scholarships Are Available

All levels of Canadian government, many post-secondary institutions, and private foundations and organizations offer hundreds of scholarship awards, grants, and bursaries to make post-secondary study more accessible.听

In fact, there are many scholarships created exclusively for international students! The best part about scholarships is that unlike a bank loan, you don鈥檛 have to pay the money back. Be proactive, save yourself some financial stress, and apply for scholarships well ahead of time.

As you apply to study in Canada, you’ll need to prove that you have access to enough money to travel to Canada, pay for tuition, and support yourself. The minimum proof of funds amount is updated yearly, so .

3. You Don鈥檛 Need to Speak French (But It鈥檚 Helpful If You Do)

Canada has two official languages: French and English. And, can converse in French. However, no more than five percent of each Canadian province’s population are Francophone (speak French as a first language) outside of Quebec and New Brunswick.听

That said, some parts of Canada are functionally bilingual. That means if you’re studying in a city like Montreal or Ottawa, you can get by with English, but speaking both can help you make friends and . Being able to speak French in a Francophone province can also make finding a part-time job easier.

If you鈥檙e fluent in French, the Francophone Minority Communities Student Pilot might be a great fit for you. It鈥檚 open to future international students from select countries who plan to study outside of Quebec.

4. Tips Are (Mostly) Mandatory

In many countries, tipping service staff is only required if service is very good. However, in Canada, service staff are typically paid minimum wage. As a result, tipping is essential for service staff to make a decent living.听

Some general , current as of 2026:

  • Dine-in restaurants: 15 to 20 percent of the total bill is expected
  • Beauty and wellness services (barbers, hairstylists, manicurists): 15 to 20 percent is expected
  • A drink at a bar: at least C$1 per drink
  • To-go coffee or takeout: 10 to 15 percent is appreciated but not required
  • Delivery food orders: at least C$5, or 10% of the total bill
  • Taxis or rideshares: 10 to 15 percent is expected
  • Hotel: tip housekeepers C$2-$5 per day, and a couple of dollars per bag that a bellhop helps you with

If service is very good or bad, you can choose to add or deduct from these numbers. In larger cities or specific businesses, other tipping percentages might be suggested by the tipping screen, but a tip of 15% or higher is widely considered standard or acceptable. If you’re tipping less, it’s usually an indication something is wrong.

You might also find a tipping screen somewhere unexpected, like a retail store. In general, tips are optional outside of the service and hospitality spaces in Canada.听

5. It鈥檚 Not Always Cold

Canada has a reputation for cold weather鈥攁nd, during the winter, it鈥檚 true. Temperatures can drop below -30掳C, and stay below 0掳C for three to six months in many Canadian communities.

However, Canadians also enjoy warm summers. If you’re studying in the central or southern parts of Quebec, Ontario, or British Columbia, prepare for humid 25掳C days. Inland provinces are less humid, but temperatures still climb to the high 20s. On the west and east coasts, the local climate is balanced out by sea breezes. These communities have fewer swings from hot to cold weather, but also more rain. Generally, weather in the late spring and early fall is nice, with longer, sunny days and cooler nights. So, if you’re arriving in August for studies in September, it will still be fairly warm.

Your key takeaway? Dress in layers. You might start the morning in a t-shirt, a sweater, and a light jacket, but by the afternoon, you might just be wearing the t-shirt. It’s also wise to save space for a rainproof layer or umbrella in your school bag. Lastly, winter clothes like warm boots and coats are bulky, and you can only pack so much when traveling to Canada. So, consider buying your winter clothes in Canada.

Wondering what to pack for studying in Canada? We’ve got you.

We hope that this guide to living and studying in Canada is helpful, and wish you luck with your study abroad journey.

Eligible courses and institutions vary by applicant country, so check the specific country page on the GREAT scholarship website for details.

Application timing also varies by institution, but institutions must award this year’s scholarships by June 30, 2026. (Missed it? Check back later this year for the 2027 application timeline.)

University-Specific Scholarships and Other Financial Assistance

Many universities offer scholarships, fellowships, and bursaries to eligible international students. Scholarship criteria is often based on a combination of academic merit, leadership potential, and financial need. Check official university or college websites for current options.

Many of the scholarships above are high-profile, and selection is competitive. It’s generally wiser to create a strong application for the one or two you believe you have the best chance at, instead of applying quickly to them all. However, private scholarships offered through your institution choose from a smaller applicant pool, so it can be worth applying more widely to these opportunities.

Paying for your studies can look different for every student, and financial assistance isn’t limited to scholarships. Student loans can also help you reach your goals.听

Did you know that 老九品茶 offers several student loan options?

Becoming an international student is no small feat, and it comes with its own unique challenges. From navigating a new culture and education system to finding part-time work, it can feel like a lot. However, with the right mindset and advice, you can turn those challenges into stepping stones and succeed as an international student.听

Below, we鈥檝e gathered valuable advice from the 2024 International Alumni of Impact (IAOI) winners to inspire your success as an international student, and help you make the most of your time abroad. From overcoming setbacks to finding your purpose, read on to find out what these incredible alumni have to say about how to succeed as an international student.

Many of our alumni attended Canadian colleges and universities featured on the 老九品茶 platform. Our platform is free to use, and can help you find a program that best fits your criteria and budget.听

A bicep flexing, symbolizing resilience and persistence.

On Resilience and Persistence听

Staying strong in the face of adversity and never giving up are key themes among our IAOI. Winners Christine Eruokwu and Qasim Farasat share why resilience and persistence matter:听

鈥淣o matter the situation, as long as you don’t give up on yourself, nobody will give up on you. And if one door closes, go through a window, go through the ceiling, whatever you have to do, just don’t give up on yourself. Because when you do, then you already called it quits, and the world doesn’t celebrate people who called it quits. The world celebrates those who forged ahead despite the challenges.鈥

鈥 Christine Eruokwu, alumnus of University of New Brunswick

鈥淓mbrace every challenge as an opportunity for growth.听 Your journey as an international student will be filled with unique experiences and sometimes, unexpected obstacles. Stay resilient, be proactive in seeking out new opportunities, and always be open to learning from every situation. Remember, the skills and perspectives you gain during this time will not only shape your future but also enable you to make a meaningful impact in the global community.鈥

鈥 Qasim Farasat, alumnus of University of Waterloo

On Embracing Failure听

Failing at something can feel bad, and it’s generally something we all want to avoid. However, our IAOI alumni believe failure is a necessary part of success:听

鈥淔ailures are good stepping stones for success鈥 A person [who immediately experiences] success will never know pain. Because if they get into any kind of trouble, they will be in a situation where they will not be able to correct [the problem]… because they [did not experience] that pain 鈥. these kinds of pains helped me.鈥

鈥 Lefin Paruvaparampil Chacko, alumnus of Cape Breton University

鈥淔ailure is not the end of it, it is part of the process. So when you fail once, just continue. Like I tell people, you’re climbing the staircase, keep climbing, don鈥檛 look back, don’t stop, just keep going. So, if you fail, just know that it鈥檚 part of the process, it’s not the end of the world. We failed, yes, but did we get up? Yes. It鈥檚 in getting up and doing what you have to do, and making sure that you achieve that goal. I think that’s what has brought us here. And also having an open mindset, not a closed mindset. Because I keep saying that my story isn’t just about overcoming challenges. It’s about embracing opportunities for growth.鈥

鈥 Rufina Ajalie, alumnus of University of New Brunswick听听听

On Finding Your Purpose听听

Everything begins with a 鈥榳hy.鈥 Choosing to study abroad comes with a long-term goal that fulfills a part of your purpose. Further exploring your ‘why’ is crucial to long-term success, as this alumnus’ advice emphasizes:

鈥淩eally nail down the WHY behind whatever you do because until you know the WHY you will not be able to convince anyone else about giving you any opportunity, whether it be a job or anything else. I have seen students apply to 500 jobs in 1 week but still never land those opportunities and a big part of it is because almost 98% of the jobs the are applying for are not even roles they are passionate about but roles that seem like they can work for them and that lack of why is what leads them not being able to advocate for themselves.鈥澨

鈥 Ritika Saraswat, alumnus of University of British Columbia听

On Seeking Support听

You don鈥檛 have to do it alone! Building a strong support network is critical when navigating the challenges of being an international student, as 2024 IAOI winner Hana Tran shares:

鈥淥ne piece of advice I would give to incoming international students is to trust that people are generally friendly and eager to help. Approach this experience and your new environment with curiosity, authenticity, and have courage to seek help when you need [it]. This openness will enhance your experience, expand your worldview, and create more opportunities for growth.鈥

Scholarship Types听

Achievements and Specific Criteria: Recognition based on accomplishments like leadership roles or active participation in extracurricular activities.

National Merit Scholarships: Awarded to outstanding students who demonstrate both high academic performance and financial need.

Merit Aid: Financial support granted based on a student鈥檚 academic, artistic, or other achievements, rather than their financial situation.

Local and Community Scholarships: Scholarships funded by local businesses, community groups, and nonprofits which promote educational opportunities within a specific area.

Searching for Scholarships听

Start Early

To begin your scholarship search, start early鈥攊deally two years before you plan to study at a post-secondary institution. This way, you get to know what the timelines for different scholarships are. Keep in mind that many scholarships have deadlines earlier in the year than college admissions deadlines. Start by conducting your own research, but don’t forget to consult with your student advisor for scholarship guidance.

Explore Local Opportunities

Research local scholarship opportunities before expanding to state and national options. Local organizations often provide scholarships to community members (check that the scholarship is open to domestic and international students), so it鈥檚 important not to overlook these potential sources of funding.

Understand Scholarship Criteria

Remember: merit scholarships can be based on a range of criteria, not just your GPA. Maintaining multi-year scholarships often requires meeting specific benchmarks, so make sure you understand and follow the requirements for each scholarship you apply for.听

Note: Watch out for potential scams. Use reliable sources for accurate information on sponsorship and exchange programs.

Read our blog to learn more about common tactics used by scammers and how to identify and avoid them.

Maximizing Scholarship Opportunities

Once you find scholarships you can apply for, take your time when drafting your application. To improve your chances, it can be helpful to keep the following tips in mind:听

  • Keep up with Deadlines: Set up a calendar to track scholarship and program application deadlines. This will help ensure you don’t miss any important dates.
  • Secure Strong References: Request reference letters from professional or academic connections at least a few months in advance of when you’d like to submit your application. A compelling reference can enhance your application significantly.
  • Don鈥檛 Rush: Dedicate time to write thoughtful and engaging personal essays. These essays are often key to a successful scholarship application!
  • Start Early: Begin your scholarship search and application process as early as possible. This approach helps you avoid last-minute issues and ensures you have enough time to explore all opportunities.
  • Double-Check Applications: Always check that your applications are complete. Ensure all sections are filled out correctly, and that all necessary documents are submitted.

Copying other people鈥檚 work can seriously hurt your chances of admission to the college or university of your dreams. Find out ways to avoid plagiarism on our blog.

With the right scholarships, studying in the US can become more affordable. Start your search early, explore every opportunity, and make sure to meet all requirements to help the American scholarship application process run smoothly.

On International Women鈥檚 Day (Friday, March 8, 2024), let鈥檚 continue to build a world where women and girls can reach their full potential. To support this year’s IWD theme, , the team at 老九品茶 created the Women in STEM Awards. Read on to learn more about the awards, and how you can #InspireInclusion yourself!

We’re proud to celebrate the tenacity of international students, both the ones starting their journeys and ones who have already graduated. Check out our post on three international student grads who are making their communities more inclusive places!

What are the Women in STEM Awards?

The Women in STEM Awards help to #InspireInclusion by granting a total of C$15,000 in scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to six female-identifying international students starting a post-secondary study program this fall in Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States.听

Award winners will be selected by education advisors who work with 老九品茶 to connect students with study programs across the world. Scholarship winners will be contacted later this year, and we’re excited to see where they’ll go!

By pursuing studies in the sciences, technology, engineering, or mathematics (also known as STEM fields), these women will gain the skills and knowledge they need to make a positive impact on our world.

An illustration of a female student holding a book.

Why Do the Women in STEM Awards Matter?

Studying internationally is an investment鈥攁nd one, given the ongoing gender pay gap, that many women will work longer to pay off. In 2024, that women still only earn $0.77 for every $1 a man does. These awards are a small way to ease some of the financial pressure these international students may feel. It’s also a symbolic gesture that says: you are welcome in these fields, and we wish you every success.

Valuing diversity in our classrooms, workplaces, and broader communities means the questions we ask鈥攁nd have to answer鈥攃hange, because different people are comfortable speaking up. This connects us to a wider range of perspectives and approaches.听

And ! For example, Stephanie Kwolek’s dual interest in chemistry and fashion led to the invention of the bulletproof fabric Kevlar. Or, across the world, Asima Chatterjee’s study of medicinal plants contributed to her invention of antimalarial and anti-epileptic medications. These are just two of the inventions women in STEM fields have come up with. We can’t wait to be inspired by (and benefit from) what the next generation of learners will create.

Curious about studying STEM in Canada? These featured programs in architecture, computer science, and more all include hands-on work experience.

#InspireInclusion Every Day

When we inspire inclusion, we help to create a better world. But how do we get started? How do we keep going past International Women’s Day? You don’t need to throw a big event, though that’s always fun! Sometimes, it’s which can add up to make an even larger difference.

Here are some ways you can inspire inclusion:

  • Celebrate your team’s or friends’ accomplishments!
  • Learn what are, and avoid using them (for example, asking only women to do admin work, like taking minutes).
  • Names matter鈥攍earn how to spell them, learn how to say them, and work to get them right. The same is true of someone’s pronouns.
  • Become a mentor or coach. Your experience is valuable!
  • Use apps like to make job descriptions more gender-neutral.
  • In a workplace, encourage managers to have 1-to-1 meetings with their direct reports, to build trust across functions.
  • When testing something new, ask for opinions from a wide range of people; consider factors like age, gender, race, and ability.
  • Support (or advocate for) , like flexible work scheduling, or remote/hybrid positions.

This International Women’s Day, and beyond, help us build a brighter future by acting inclusively. Even small steps move us all forward!
